THE THERAPIST
 
My name is Katie Jensen. I have been in the mental health field for over 20 years.  Over the years I have learned steps to building a better life. (While I may use other forms of therapy, my first level of treatment is always from a Dialectical Behavior therapy framework-it's as if I cannot not do the skills in life). I have been using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) since 1994 and have been trained in all modalities of trauma therapy (EMDR I and II, and Exposure therapy, as a trainer with Dr. Edna Foa at the University of Pennsylvania).  I work with a team of other therapists who help me use my skills as I interact with you. This insures that your therapist is using skills "with" you instead of "on" you. 
 
Coaching
I work with individuals, families, companies, organizations to improve social skills and effectiveness.  With coaching, the focus is on improving skills, and with therapy we would address underlying psychological issues. I can work with organizations as a whole or individual leaders from the top down. I have done large group seminars to teach skills to an organization or to a leadership team. These skills shift the paradigm and remove the blockages that keep us stuck in ineffective patterns of behavior.

We offer the following groups:

Men's DBT group, (Wed 5:30 pm-7:00pm)
Women's DBT group (Thu 9:15 am-10:45am)
Coed DBT group (Tues 7:30-9:00)
 
We also offer a second level Process group for those who complete all the DBT modules and want an extra growth challenge. Please contact me if you have been through all the modules offered and would like to join a process group.
 
THE STEPS TO INNER PEACE
 
In my personal search for peace, I became aware of how my childhood helped to create the map I live by today. In this map was woven thoughts, beliefs and experiences that kept taking me to the same places, over and over. For most of us, this recreation of our internal map, prevents us from seeing outside of our own self created paradigm. Through our interaction with memory, language, thoughts, and emotions we tend to replay certain themes or templates in our lives. These skills and the focus on accountability from within, changes the paradigm and allows us to rewrite our maps.

If you were raised in an invalidating environment, where your personal experiences were not validated it is likely that you are suffering from a deficit in coping skills. Environments that can be invalidating are those where there is alcoholism, mental illness, sexual abuse, child abuse, neglect, death or illness of a parent, adoption, sexism or racism. Invalidating environments can causes deficits in emotion regulation, interpersonal skills, skills for intimacy, tolerating distress and self management. We prefer to treat skills deficits than "illness".  I can tailor a program to improve your skills and to help you learn to solve your own problems as you build a better, more effective life.
