Tell me about your life, the problem that causes your contact with me. Know that your call is confidential, and that your problems all have solutions.
First I assess your situation to see if there is evidence of chronic invalidation in your history or the history of anyone you love. We assess for emotion regulation skills, interpersonal skills, impulse control issues, and your ability to cope with stress. Then we begin talking about a plan to treat your problems.
For some people group skills are the fun and interesting way to go. In our DBT groups we focus on teaching skills that improve intimacy, improve self trust, and self esteem. We work on skills that help to build a better life. These skills are fun to use because they work. They were developed by Marsha Linehan and are called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills. There were originally developed for a personality disorder called "Borderline Personality Disorder". Linehan once said that Bordeline Personality Disorder is like super duper co-dependency. So if there is alcoholism, or addiction in your history or in your current situation you may really benefit from the DBT skills.
There are two skills in DBT that really lead to a "paradigm shift" for many people. The two skills that really seem to shift perspective are "The wise mind" and "The Dialectic". In using wise mind we learn how to practice a non judgmental stance in a more disciplined and committed way. This allows us to decrease impulsive, and mood dependent decisions. It helps us honor our emotions and learn to use them as guide instead of leader.
Once you have begun to learn the skills we set target goals of behaviors to increase and behaviors to decrease. With an individual, we work on issues like eating too much, drinking too much, arguing, temper tantrums, over spending, gambling, too much tv and electronics, eating disorders...etc. Within the marriage we increase skills to decrease unconscious harmful templates that create an under current of turbulence in a family. Within the organization, we focus on subconscious beliefs, thoughts and emotions that influence the corporate culture. We evaluate the emotional intelligence of the organization in regard to invalidation, emotion regulation, and judgments that can interfere with reaching potential.
The way we apply DBT is considered DBT "like" therapy. We do not follow a purely clinical format as laid out by Marsha Linehan with all our clients. We treat those in need of a clinical treatment of DBT in accordance with the protocols set out by Marsha Linehan. For others, we modfiy to meet the situation. We treat a variety of problems and feel certain that all people can enrich their lives by using these skills. Our practice seeks to help people do more of what works, and is less centered on the concept of "pathology". We at peaceRme understand the need for medications, but believe that most of life's suffering is caused from our inability to accept the way life is. And in this refusal to accept, misery and suffering result. Mental illnesses may have organic causes but much like being left handed, or diabetic, the greatest problem exists in our radical acceptance of both our strengths and weaknesses. We are not anti medication, but we know that using skills will cause no side effects or harm. We understand that medications can and do sometimes cause harmful side effects. We also understand that without them, many of our clients could not function. We seek balance.
YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE. THE DEGREE OF CHANGE DEPENDS ON YOU!
